Student answer (Band 6.0)

Over recent years, the benefits of learning a foreign language has become a hotly debated issue in society. Some individuals believe that learning a foreign language is importent for traveling or working in another country because of its effect on the standard of life of a person. While others argue that learning a foreign language can have different reasons. In this essay, I will examine both perspectives before presenting my own opinion on this matter.

On the one hand, many individuals argue that learning a foreign language for working and traveling to abroad is the better option. One of the main reasons for this is speaking the foreign language makes the communication better and builds trust with the people of the foreign country. For example a person who is working can better communicate and can make the others understand him easily compare to the other person who can not speak or understand the language.

On the other hand, others believe that learning a foreign language have different reasons like studying and learning about the culture, history and identity of the country is more effective approach. One significant reason for this belief is to know about their culture, have information about their history, understand the subjects, and know the identity of the people of the foreign country. For example, a person who is studying and want to learn about the culture, history to know the identity of the people will be able to enter to the society faster than the other one who is working and traveling.

In my opinion, while both arguments have merit , I believe that learning a language for different reasons is more convincing viewpoint. This is mainly because learning a language should be for studying, to have information about the culture and history.

In conclusion, although some people argue that learning languages for working and traveling offers more important benefits, others believe that learning language for studying, to know th culture and history, is more effective option. After considering bth perspectives, I believe that learning language for studying , to know the culture and history is ultimately the better approach because of its positive impacts on individuals and society as a whole.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views and state a clear preference: learning languages for broader purposes such as study and cultural understanding. The examples about workplace communication and entering a society are relevant, so the response addresses the task. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The first view is mainly supported by the general claim that language improves communication, while the second repeats studying, culture, history and identity without explaining in detail why these benefits matter. Your opinion also needs fuller justification; the conclusion largely restates the same reasons rather than adding support. Develop each view with a specific, explained example, and clarify how your preferred reasons extend beyond travel and work.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs, your opinion and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, and the reader can identify your position. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, links between ideas are sometimes mechanical, and the body paragraphs rely on repeated formulations rather than building a sequence of claim, explanation and example. For instance, the second body paragraph lists culture, history, subjects and identity, then returns to similar points in the example. Use clearer referencing and develop each paragraph around one main reason.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “communication,” “culture,” “history,” “identity” and “perspectives.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “hotly debated issue” and “both arguments have merit.” However, the range is limited by repeated words and phrases, especially “learning a foreign language,” “people,” and “culture, history.” Several choices or combinations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “traveling to abroad,” “the better option,” and “more effective viewpoint”; spelling errors such as “importent,” “th,” and “bth” also reduce control. Build a wider set of precise expressions for language learning and cultural exchange, and check spelling and collocations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “while” and “who,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. However, errors occur across sentence structures and agreement, and some complex attempts are not controlled. For example, “the benefits … has become” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “learning a foreign language have different reasons” also uses an incorrect verb form. Other problems include “a person who is studying and want” and the construction “enter to the society.” Punctuation spacing is inconsistent, and some sentences run together awkwardly. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, verb forms and sentence boundaries, then proofread each sentence for a complete, grammatically consistent structure.
