The charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English, in 2000 and 2010

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two pie charts compare the proportions of British students able to speak other languages other than English from one university in England, in 2000 and 2010.

Overall, the majority of the students were not able to speak any other language than English in both the years. Over the years the proportion of students who were able to spoke Spanish and French reduced significantly.

In 2000, around 30% students accounted for not able to speak any other language than English only. This was followed by Spanish language only at around 20% of students. Meanwhile, the students with ability to speak French and another language with English made up equal share at 15% each. Similarly, the shares of German only and two other languages in addition to English were at 10% each.

By 2010, the proportion of students for not able to spoke other languages than English increased to 35%, which was the highest recorded figures among others. The students able to spoke Spanish, French, and German with English made up equal share at 10% each. Moreover, the proportion of students able to spoke another language and two other languages than English stood at 15% and 20%, respectively.
