Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response provides a clear overview and identifies the main trends, such as the increase in English-only speakers and the shifts in other language categories. You have successfully selected key features and made relevant comparisons between the two years. However, the report could be improved by ensuring all data points are accurately represented. For example, you mention 'two other languages' and 'another language' as separate categories, which may be a misinterpretation of the chart labels. Additionally, ensure that the data cited for 2010 is precise; for instance, stating that proportions increased by 5% is a good analytical step, but ensure the base figures are clearly linked to the chart data to avoid ambiguity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the data for 2000 and 2010 respectively. This structure is effective and easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In 2000', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader through the information. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother and avoid repetitive phrasing. The referencing is generally clear, though some of the category labels could be integrated more fluidly into the sentences to improve the flow of the analysis.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'illustrate', and 'respectively'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices are slightly awkward, such as 'reached at 35%' (should be 'reached 35%') and 'speak in another language than English' (should be 'speak a language other than English'). To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that the terminology used to describe the chart categories is accurate and consistent throughout the response. Expanding your range of reporting verbs would also enhance the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'only speak in English' (should be 'speak only English'), 'reached at 35%', and 'German only and two other languages speakers each stood at 10%'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do affect the overall accuracy. To improve, pay closer attention to preposition usage and subject-verb agreement. Incorporating a wider variety of complex structures, such as relative clauses or participle phrases, would help demonstrate greater control and flexibility in your writing.
