Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie charts illustrate the information about the proportions of British learners at one university in England who were able to speak others languages other than English, in 2000 and 2010. The units are given in percentages.

Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that no other language reached the highest proportions of both years, while German only recorded the lowest percentage.

To begin with, it is evident that no other language accounted for 30 % of the total in 2000, whereas it was higher by 10 percentage point Spanish only, which occupied 20%. Furthermore, another language in both years had the narrowest gap, at 15% and 20%. Additionally, German only and Two other languages in 2000 and 2010 were broadly similar, representing 10% and 10% respectively.

By contrast, no other language stood at 35% in 2010, while it was less then 15 percentage points another language, which occupied 20%. Moreover, the largest disparity can be observed between no other language in 2010 and German only in 2000, represented 10% and 35%. it is worth highlighting that Another language in 2000 was half of Spanish only 2010, the figures were 10% and 20% .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying key trends and making comparisons between 2000 and 2010. However, the analysis is hampered by confusing terminology. The student refers to categories as 'no other language' and 'another language', which appear to be misinterpretations of the chart labels (likely 'No other language' and 'Two other languages'). This leads to inaccurate reporting of the data. While the overview is present, the lack of clarity in identifying the specific categories makes the summary difficult to follow and reduces the accuracy of the information presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, and there is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'By contrast'. However, the logical progression is frequently interrupted by unclear referencing. For example, the phrase 'no other language stood at 35% in 2010' is ambiguous, and the connection between sentences is often mechanical. The use of cohesive devices is sometimes repetitive or used in a way that does not clearly link the data points, making the overall flow somewhat disjointed.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student relies heavily on phrases like 'no other language' and 'another language', which seem to be misread labels from the chart. There are also errors in collocation and phrasing, such as 'reached the highest proportions of both years' and 'less then 15 percentage points another language'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the lack of precision in describing statistical data and the misuse of key terms limit the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include incorrect preposition usage ('at 35%... while it was less then 15 percentage points another language'), missing articles, and awkward sentence construction. Punctuation is generally functional, but the errors in sentence structure occasionally impede the clarity of the comparisons being made. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, and the frequency of errors prevents a higher band score.
