Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the charts and makes relevant comparisons. You successfully identified the highest and lowest categories and noted changes over time. However, the analysis is sometimes confusing due to imprecise phrasing, such as 'no other language accounted for 30%'. It is unclear if this refers to students who spoke no other language or a specific category. Additionally, some comparisons are mathematically awkward, such as 'it was less than 15 percentage points another language'. To improve, ensure that the labels for the categories are clearly defined and that the mathematical relationships between the data points are described with greater clarity and precision.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction and an overview. You use some cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'By contrast' to link ideas. However, the progression of information within the body paragraphs is sometimes disjointed. The referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow which data point is being compared to another. For example, the sentence 'it is worth highlighting that Another language in 2000 was half of Spanish only 2010' is grammatically and logically strained, which hinders the flow of information.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportions', 'disparity', and 'recorded'. However, there is a lack of precision in your word choices, particularly when referring to the chart categories. Phrases like 'German only' and 'no other language' are repeated frequently, which makes the writing feel somewhat repetitive. There are also minor errors in collocation, such as 'it was less than 15 percentage points another language', which slightly obscures the intended meaning. Expanding your range of reporting verbs and comparative structures would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of your writing. For instance, 'it was 10 percentage points higher than Spanish only, which occupied 20%' is slightly awkward, and 'represented 10% and 35%' lacks a proper subject. There are also issues with punctuation and sentence fragments, such as starting a sentence with 'it is worth highlighting' without proper capitalization. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring that your complex sentences are error-free and that your subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the response.
