Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given chart elaborates the proportion of the British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English in 2000 and 2010.

The first given chart points out the percentage of the British students in the year 2000 ,who were speaking languages other than English .There were 30% and 35% students who were not interested in the other language in years 2000 and 2010 respectively .Students who were interested in French language only were 15% and 10% accordingly of the total strength .Now, students with interest in German only were 10% in both the years .When we look at the students who were fluent in Spanish were 20% in 2000 ,decreased to 10% in 2010.There might have been too many students who spoke other languages rather than the discussed ones with the proportion 15% in 2000 that gradually increased to 20% in 2010.

At the end ,there were still most of the students who were having expertise in two other languages with the proportion of 10% in 2000 and 15% in 2010 comparatively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all the requirements of the task. You have identified the main features and provided relevant comparisons between the two years. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical, listing data points rather than synthesising the information into a more analytical overview. To reach a higher band, ensure you provide a clear 'overview' paragraph that highlights the most significant trends (e.g., the increase in students speaking two languages versus the decline in Spanish speakers) rather than just listing percentages. The data is accurate, but the presentation could be more strategic to better highlight the key differences between 2000 and 2010.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organised, with a clear introduction and body paragraphs. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and mechanical. Phrases like 'The first given chart' and 'At the end' are a bit simplistic. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and transition signals to connect your ideas more fluidly. For example, instead of starting sentences with 'There were', try using more sophisticated structures to introduce data, such as 'While the proportion of students speaking Spanish stood at 20% in 2000, this figure experienced a decline to 10% by 2010.'

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey the information, using terms like 'proportion', 'expertise', and 'fluent'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'total strength' (which is not standard in this context) and 'not interested in the other language' (which is a bit informal). To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'accounted for'. Your spelling is generally accurate, but the phrasing is occasionally slightly unnatural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with punctuation and article usage (e.g., 'the French language', 'the Spanish'). There are also some awkward phrasings, such as 'There might have been too many students who spoke other languages', which is not the most precise way to describe a statistical increase. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of your complex sentence structures will also help you achieve a higher score.
