Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the charts and makes relevant comparisons between 2000 and 2010. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For instance, the description of the data is occasionally confusing, such as stating 'English is the only language that was spoken most' and then listing other languages. The summary of the trends could be more precise; while you identify the increase in 'another language', the overall overview lacks a clear synthesis of the shifts in language popularity. To improve, ensure that your summary highlights the most significant changes rather than just listing percentages, and ensure the data interpretation is accurate and easy to follow.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'Overall', 'At a fleeting glance', and 'Probing ahead' to signal transitions. However, some of these phrases are slightly unnatural or misused in an academic context. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using more varied linking words rather than relying on repetitive structures. The referencing is mostly clear, though the flow between sentences could be smoother to better connect the comparative data points.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'calibrated', 'proportions', and 'initial year'. However, there are instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'British scholars in the one university', 'highly spoken speech', and 'faced same amount'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more academic collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. Expanding your range of descriptive verbs and adjectives related to data trends will also help improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including issues with articles ('the one university'), subject-verb agreement ('two other languages also faced same amount'), and prepositions ('in the former time period'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the data. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage and ensure that your sentence structures are grammatically sound. Practising the use of complex sentences with accurate punctuation will help you demonstrate better control over your grammar.
