Student answer (Band 6.5)

The provided chart depicts about the ratio of British students that are proficient in other languages in addition to English in 2000 and 2010. The data has been calibrated into proportion.

Overall it is crystal clear that most of the pupils were monolingual while a notable reduction can also be seen in the percentile of British students at university in England.

At the fleeting glance, a significant reduction in speakers of Spanish was seen as it dipped from 20% to 10% only while people speaking another and two other languages experienced 5% increase across the both years of data.

Moreover, students with only English as their spoken language rose from 30% in 2000 to 35% in 2010. In addition French speaking students were reduced from 15% to only 10%. However, German language speaking students remained similar across the both years of the data as they were consistent at 10% in both 2000 and 2010.

Thus the overall trend describes promotion of other languages but also decrease in some spoken languages can be seen in the data.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the key trends for each language category. You successfully highlighted the decline in Spanish and French speakers, the stability of German, and the rise in monolingual students. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate; you mention a 'notable reduction' in the percentile of students, which is not supported by the data, as the monolingual group actually increased. Additionally, the phrase 'promotion of other languages' in the conclusion is not supported by the evidence provided. To improve, ensure your overview accurately reflects the data trends and avoid making generalisations that are not explicitly shown in the charts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'However' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel slightly forced. The referencing is generally clear, but the connection between the final summary and the body paragraphs could be more seamless. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that contributes to the overall progression of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proficient', 'monolingual', and 'calibrated'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'depicts about the ratio' (the 'about' is redundant) and 'at the fleeting glance' (the correct idiom is 'at a fleeting glance' or 'at a glance'). Some phrasing is also slightly awkward, such as 'calibrated into proportion'. To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensure that your collocations are natural. Expanding your range of reporting verbs and comparative language will also help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'across the both years' (should be 'across both years') and 'students with only English as their spoken language rose' (which is grammatically acceptable but could be more concise). There are also minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of articles and prepositions to improve the accuracy of your complex sentences.
