IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English, in 2000 and 2010

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie charts illustrate the amount of students with the speaking skill of other languages besides English, in a specific university of England during 2000 and 2010.

Overall, in 2000, minority of the students only spoke English, while the students who speak German and other two language had the least amount. As for 2010, even though non-speaker and German speaker were both in the same place as 2000, Spanish and French speaker became the same amount as the German learners.

If we look closely, the amount of students who only speak English went up by 5%. Whereas students with the knowledge of French and Spanish went down by 10 and 5 percent each. Also, the proportion of the bilingual students had a 5 percent improvement, which had a great impact on the general trend.

In general, even though the students' variety of language skill and bilingualism rose up gradually, the amount of Spanish, French and German speaker had decreased.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response provides a summary of the main features, but the analysis is somewhat inconsistent and contains inaccuracies. For instance, you state that the proportion of students who only speak English went up by 5%, but the data shows a decrease from 30% to 20%. Additionally, the description of the trends is occasionally confusing, such as claiming that Spanish and French speakers became the same amount as German learners in 2010, which is not clearly supported by the visual data. To improve, ensure you accurately interpret the percentages and focus on highlighting the most significant changes rather than listing every minor fluctuation. A clearer overview of the main trends would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'Overall', 'As for', and 'Whereas' to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by unclear referencing and slightly awkward transitions. For example, the phrase 'in the same place as 2000' is vague and does not clearly describe the data. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider range of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, logical focus that connects smoothly to the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to describe the charts with basic accuracy. You use terms like 'proportions', 'bilingual', and 'general trend'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'amount of students' (use 'number of students' for countable nouns) and 'rose up' (which is redundant). The range is somewhat limited, and you rely on repetitive phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'accounted for', and pay closer attention to collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'minority of the students' (should be 'a minority of students') and 'other two language' (should be 'other two languages'). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic errors in pluralisation and articles, and try to vary your sentence structures with more complex clauses to demonstrate better control.
