The charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English, in 2000 and 2010

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar graphs depict the percentage of university students who were able to speak different languages apart from english in England in 2000 and 2010.

Overall, it can be seen that the highest proportion of students were not able to speak any other language except english and the proportion of german speakers remained same in both years.

In 2000, the highest proportion of university students were able to speak only english in England. In England, only 10 percent students were able to german while the figure doubled in the case of Spanish speakers. The number of individuals who were able to speak french and other language was same which was 15 percent; however, the figure dropped to 10 percent for learners who were able to communicate in two other languages.

After 10 years, the percentage of students who were able to communicate only in english increased to 35 percent. The proportion of British students who spoke another languages and two other languages increased by 5 percent and remained 20% and 15 , respectively. However, the figure for the french, german and Spanish speakers remained same which was 10 percent in 2010 in England.
