The charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English, in 2000 and 2010

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie charts compare the percentage of British students able to speak languages other than English between 2000 and 2010.

Overall, it can be clearly seen that while the number of students who were able to speak Spanish and French decreased throughout the period ,students speaking other languages and no other language increased. However, the proportion for German speaking students remained unchanged.

In 2000, No other language had the largest proportion of students accounted for 30% of total followed by Spanish at 20%. Students speak French only and another language represented each 15% while only 10% students were able to speak German and two other language.

By contrast, in 2010 percentage of students able to speak no other language and another language both increased by 5%, accounting for 35% and 20% of total students respectively. The proportion of students who could speak in Spanish, French decreased to 10% each. However, the percentage of German speaking students remained unchanged at 10%.
