Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the task achievement. Because the response is only 96 words, the analysis is underdeveloped and lacks the necessary detail required for a Band 6 or higher. While you have identified some main features, such as the increase in students speaking no other languages and the decline in French/Spanish speakers, the lack of data points and insufficient length means you have not fully addressed the task. To improve, you must provide a more comprehensive overview and include specific data comparisons for all categories shown in the charts.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction and an overview paragraph. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Overall' and 'Similarly' to connect ideas. However, the paragraphing is limited due to the short length of the text. To reach a higher band, ensure that you group information more effectively and use a wider range of cohesive devices to link sentences and paragraphs more fluidly. The progression of ideas is clear, but the brevity of the response prevents a more sophisticated development of the information.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportions', 'considerably', and 'declined' correctly. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor errors such as 'student' instead of 'students' and the typo 'Similary'. To improve, try to incorporate more varied vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'accounted for'. Expanding your range of synonyms will help you achieve a higher score by avoiding repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as the missing plural 's' in 'British student' and the awkward phrasing 'w students knowing'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there is a missing space after the period in '2010.Similary'. To improve, focus on proofreading for minor slips and aim to use a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses or participial phrases, to enhance the sophistication of your writing.
