Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response identifies some main features, such as the decline in Spanish and the increase in 'another language'. However, the summary is incomplete and contains inaccuracies. For instance, the claim that 'students wanting to learn other than English fallen' is not fully supported by the data, as some categories increased. The report lacks a clear overview of the trends and fails to make meaningful comparisons between the two years. The final sentence is incomplete, which leaves the task unfinished. To improve, ensure all data points are accurately interpreted and that the overview synthesizes the information rather than just listing changes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response uses basic cohesive devices like 'To commence' and 'In contrast', but these are often used incorrectly or mechanically. The paragraphing is weak, with the overview merged into the introduction and a very short, fragmented final paragraph. The logical progression is hindered by the repetitive structure of the sentences and the lack of clear transitions between the data points. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between 2000 and 2010. Improving the structure by grouping related data points would significantly enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student relies on basic verbs like 'grow', 'decreased', 'fallen', and 'soar', often with incorrect tense or form (e.g., 'is also soar', 'is also decreased'). There is little attempt to use academic collocations or precise terminology related to data description. Some phrasing is awkward, such as 'know other language excluding English'. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using a wider variety of verbs and nouns to describe trends, such as 'witnessed a decline', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a significant rise'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are consistent issues with verb tenses and passive voice construction, such as 'Spanish speakers are fallen' instead of 'Spanish speakers fell' or 'have fallen'. Subject-verb agreement is also problematic, for example, 'proportion is rose'. The sentence structures are simple and often lack correct punctuation. The final sentence is a fragment ('so language is imp'), which indicates a lack of control over sentence completion. Focusing on basic sentence construction and consistent tense usage is essential for improvement.
