Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the charts and makes relevant comparisons between 2000 and 2010. However, the data reporting is occasionally inaccurate or confusing. For example, the student states 'no other language was accounted on highest proportion' when referring to the 'no other language' category, which is confusing phrasing. Additionally, the claim that 'German language was remained same' is factually incorrect based on the provided data (it decreased from 10% to 5%). While the overview is present, the lack of precision in reporting the data points limits the score to a Band 5.0, as the information is not always accurately conveyed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Moreover', and 'Consequently'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or logically flawed, such as using 'Consequently' to introduce a statement about the data that does not follow as a logical result of the previous sentence. The referencing is occasionally unclear, making the progression of ideas feel somewhat disjointed. Overall, the response is coherent enough to be understood, but the flow between ideas needs more refinement.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student relies heavily on basic phrasing such as 'accounted on', 'soared', and 'dived'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'no other language was ranking greatest' and 'was dived to 10 percent'. These errors occasionally cause the reader to pause to interpret the intended meaning. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise verbs for describing trends (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'declined') and ensure that the terminology used to describe the categories is accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Examples include 'rather then' (should be 'than'), 'char illustrates' (should be 'chart'), 'was accounted on' (should be 'accounted for'), and 'German language was remained' (should be 'remained'). Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent, and there are several instances of incorrect preposition usage. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic sentence construction prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
