IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English, in 2000 and 2010

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the charts presented to us, we could study the demographic of British students speaking any languages other than English 10 years apart in 2000 and 2010.

Firstly, we could make out that the amount of people that only spoke German apart from English did not change at all in these 2 years. The next thing that we could see is that the percentage of students speaking either only Spanish or only French grew smaller while comparing them in 2000 to 2010.

The change and increase we could mark out is majorly present in people who spoke no other languages which grew from 30 to 35% showing more students that did not know any other languages. Another segments were the students who spoke 2 other languages apart from the mentioned ones and any other language apart from English which are not mentioned. They too grew by 5% each representing a more diverse background of students that may be linked to countries originally not in England.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response provides a general overview of the data, but it lacks the precision required for a higher band. While you identify some trends, such as the increase in students speaking no other languages and the decrease in Spanish and French speakers, the reporting of figures is somewhat imprecise. For instance, you mention 'the amount of people' rather than referring to percentages, and you fail to include specific data points for all categories, such as the exact percentages for Spanish or French. To improve, ensure you select and highlight the most significant features and support them with accurate data from the charts to provide a more comprehensive summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly' and 'Another segments' to link your points. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate, such as the phrase 'Another segments'. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is smoother. Overall, the structure is functional but lacks the sophisticated cohesion expected at higher levels.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. You rely on repetitive phrasing such as 'we could see' and 'we could make out', which limits the academic tone of the report. There are also some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'Another segments' instead of 'Other segments' or 'Another category'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a decline', and avoid informal phrasing like 'make out' or 'presented to us'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the amount of people that only spoke' (should be 'the proportion of students who spoke') and 'any other language... which are not mentioned' (which is slightly awkward). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are instances where sentence construction could be more refined. You demonstrate a basic control of grammar, but to improve, you need to focus on subject-verb agreement and using more varied, error-free complex structures.
