Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the trends for the different language categories. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, cohesive overview. While you have selected key data points, the description of the 'two other languages' is confusingly phrased, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison. To improve, ensure you clearly distinguish between the categories and provide a more analytical summary of the overall trends rather than just listing percentages. The 'no other language' category is correctly identified as the most significant, but the explanation of the other categories lacks precision.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is hindered by awkward phrasing and repetitive sentence structures. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'shifting to remaining data' and 'whereas', but they are often applied mechanically or incorrectly. For instance, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is abrupt. The referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when discussing the 'two other languages', which makes the progression of ideas difficult to follow. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'number', 'percentage', and 'language'. There are several errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'addiction' instead of 'addition', 'consant' instead of 'constant', and 'britisher' which is not standard academic terminology. You attempt to use some descriptive verbs like 'uplift' and 'decreased', but these are not always used in the correct context. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider range of vocabulary, including synonyms and more precise collocations to describe trends and data points.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'The bar chart illustrate' and 'people was chose'. Punctuation is also problematic, with spaces before commas and inconsistent capitalisation throughout the text. While you attempt some complex sentence structures, they are often marred by errors, such as 'two other language which spell by bristish speaker was 10%'. You need to focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb tenses and subject-verb agreement before attempting more complex structures.
