The charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English, in 2000 and 2010

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given pie charts illustrates the proportion of British students at a university in England who were able to speak other languages along with in english in 2000 and 2010.

Overall, the percentage of monolingual students who can speak only English was more as compared to other multilingual students in the year 2000 and it increased even more after a decade in 2010. Similarly, percentage of students speaking languages other than Spanish, German and French along with the percentage of students speaking two other languages also increased through the decade.

Spanish was the most spoken language after English, being used by 20% of the total students. Following that, French and German were spoken by 15% and 10% of the students respectively in 2000. After a decade in 2010, Spanish, German and French were individually spoken by 10% of the students, each.

Monolingual students, who can speak only English were around 30% of the total students in 2000, that proportion rose to 35% by the year 2010. Apart from Spanish, French and German, the students who can speak other foreign language rose from 15% in 2000 to 20% by 2010. There were also multilingual students who could speak two more languages other than English, they increased to 15% in 2010 from being around 10% in 2000.
