Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the trends for different languages. However, the analysis is hampered by significant inaccuracies in reporting the data. For example, you state that French declined to 10% in 2000, which is logically inconsistent with the timeline. Furthermore, the summary of the data is often confusing, such as the claim that 'no other' language was the highest proportion, which is accurate, but the subsequent description of other categories is difficult to follow due to poor data representation. To improve, ensure that your data points are accurately transcribed from the charts and that your comparisons are clearly linked to the specific years provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is frequently interrupted by grammatical errors and awkward phrasing. While you use some cohesive devices like 'Overall', 'In addition', and 'However', their effectiveness is limited by the surrounding sentence structure. The progression of ideas is often disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between 2000 and 2010. To improve, focus on using transition words more naturally and ensure that each sentence clearly relates to the previous one to build a cohesive argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic structures. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'learners choose spoke least language' and 'student prefer remain stable'. These errors occasionally make the meaning unclear. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider range of vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained constant', or 'accounted for'. Additionally, work on using verbs and nouns correctly in context rather than repeating the same simple phrases throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
Grammar is the weakest area of this response. There are persistent errors in verb tense and form, such as 'able to spoke' (should be 'able to speak') and 'students number was rise' (should be 'the number of students rose'). Sentence structures are often fragmented or incorrectly constructed, which frequently impedes communication. There is very little evidence of complex sentence structures, and even simple sentences contain errors. You need to focus on basic subject-verb agreement and the correct use of infinitives and past tense forms to improve your clarity and accuracy.
