Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie charts compare the proportions of British students at university in England who could speak other languages apart from English in 2000 and 2010.
Overall, Spanish was most popular in both 2000 and 2010, while the share of students who spoke no other language declined in 2010 by a margin of 10%. Speakers of two other languages and another language increased their contribution by 5% in 2010. German was the only language whose percentage remained constant in both eras.
In both periods, Spanish remained the highest, while there was only a 5% increase in 2010, and it jumped from 30 to 35%. French and another language had the same position at the start of the 21st century, but at the end of the first decade, another language outweighed French by a steady increase of 5%. The contribution of multilingual students who spoke two languages rose significantly from 10 to 15%.
In contrast, the percentage of students who spoke no other language fell in the next ten years accounted for 20 to 10%. The number of students speaking Another language experienced an upward trend and showed a slight increase of 5% at the end of the decade despite the proportion of German speakers remaining stable in both periods.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the charts, including the overall trends and specific data comparisons. You successfully identified the most popular language (Spanish) and the stable category (German). However, the analysis is slightly repetitive, particularly in the third and fourth paragraphs where the same data points are revisited. To reach a higher band, ensure that each comparison is distinct and adds new information rather than restating previous points. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the main trends, which is essential for a high score in Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In both periods', 'In contrast', and 'while' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the third and fourth paragraphs is somewhat disjointed because the information regarding 'no other language' and 'another language' is split across both sections. Improving the grouping of data—perhaps by grouping languages by their growth or decline—would enhance the logical progression of your report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportions', 'remained constant', 'outweighed', and 'upward trend'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'contribution' when referring to language percentages, which is slightly unnatural in this context. Additionally, the phrase 'at the end of the first decade' is a bit wordy. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations related to data reporting, such as 'accounted for' or 'constituted' rather than 'contribution'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'accounted for 20 to 10%', which should be 'fell from 20% to 10%'. Another error is 'French and another language had the same position', where 'position' is slightly vague. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To move to a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and using more varied complex structures with greater precision.
