Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarize the charts, but it fails to clearly identify the main trends or make meaningful comparisons. The data provided is often confusing or inaccurate (e.g., 'French ratio is 15' without context). The overview is vague, and the description of the data is fragmented, making it difficult for the reader to understand the actual proportions. The response lacks a clear structure for reporting data, and the information provided in the 2010 paragraph is particularly difficult to follow, as it does not clearly contrast with the 2000 data. To improve, focus on identifying the highest and lowest categories and describing the shifts between the two years clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand,' which are not appropriate for a data description task. Referencing is frequently unclear, with pronouns like 'which' used incorrectly to refer to people or groups. The flow between sentences is disjointed, and the lack of clear signposting makes the report difficult to follow. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear focus would significantly enhance the coherence of the writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'growing rate of youth speak Spanish' and 'two other language speakers.' The student struggles to use precise terminology for describing data, often relying on vague terms like 'ratio' or 'proportion' incorrectly. Spelling errors, such as 'leaners' instead of 'learners,' also occur. To reach a higher band, you should practice using more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'increased,' 'decreased,' 'remained stable,' and 'accounted for.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are significant issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'percentage of British leaners which are able'), incorrect sentence structures, and misuse of prepositions. The range of structures is limited, and the attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, leading to confusion. For example, 'Spanish and French twice speakers ratio are 10 percent' is grammatically incoherent. Focusing on basic sentence construction and ensuring subject-verb agreement would be a good starting point for improvement.
