Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the task by describing the data from 2000 and 2010. However, it fails to provide a clear overview or identify the most significant trends. The description is largely a list of figures rather than a synthesis of information. For instance, the student lists percentages for each category without grouping them or highlighting the main changes effectively. The comparison between the two years is present but lacks analytical depth, as it focuses on minor fluctuations rather than the overall shift in language proficiency. To improve, you should group related data points and focus on the most striking changes, such as the increase in students with no other language skills.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The sentences are often disjointed, and the use of cohesive devices is very limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'in last' or 'that was student' make the flow of information difficult to follow. There is a lack of linking words to connect the ideas within and between paragraphs. The referencing is also unclear, as the student frequently refers to 'the chart' or 'the last chart' rather than using cohesive devices to link the data points themselves. Improving the use of transition signals and ensuring each paragraph has a clear focus would significantly enhance the coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on the words provided in the prompt. There is a lack of variety in reporting verbs and descriptive language. For example, the student repeatedly uses 'increase' and 'speaking' without variation. There are also several errors in word choice and form, such as 'proporitions' (spelling), 'british student' (singular instead of plural), and 'little drop down'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the data with precision. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate a wider range of synonyms and more sophisticated reporting language, such as 'accounted for', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a decline'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the student was only speaking'), incorrect article usage, and missing prepositions. Sentence structures are mostly simple and often fragmented or run-on. For example, 'No other language become 35% it is increase 5% from 2000 chart' lacks proper punctuation and grammatical structure. There is very little evidence of complex sentence structures, and the errors in basic grammar are persistent throughout the text. Focusing on sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and correct tense usage is essential for improvement.
