Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response provides a clear overview and identifies the main trends, such as the increase in students speaking no other languages. However, the data reporting is inconsistent and contains inaccuracies. For instance, you state that 'Spanish only' and 'French only' had an identical value of 15% in 2000, but the chart shows different figures. Furthermore, the description of the 2010 data is confusing; you mention 'Spanish only' and 'French only' sharing the lowest spot at 10%, but the chart indicates these categories are distinct. To improve, ensure you carefully cross-reference the data points with the visual information provided to avoid factual errors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the years 2000 and 2010. There is a clear progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For example, the transition 'Regarding 2000' and 'Turning to 2010' is functional but basic. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the phrase 'followed by those who Spanish only', which lacks a verb. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to describe the charts effectively. You use terms like 'proportion', 'illustrate', and 'categories' appropriately. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'remained at the lowest percentage' when describing a static figure, or 'candidates' to refer to students. There are also minor errors in word forms, such as 'Germany' instead of 'German'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring that word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('students who speaks no other language'), missing articles ('shared lowest spot'), and awkward phrasing ('followed by those who Spanish only'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To improve, pay closer attention to basic grammar rules, particularly subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, and proofread your work to catch these slips.
