IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English, in 2000 and 2010

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The both charts illustrates the information between two different time lines of 200 and 2010 that how much British students were able to speak before in 2000 and after that in 2010.

Overall, in both charts the percentage of those students who were not able to speak other language except English was the highest. And the least one is of German in both the years. As there are total six languages discussed, which are Spanish, only English, German, ANOTHER language , French only, and two other languages.

Well, as we take a look at the first chart of 2000 the students who had the ability of speaking French only were at 15% and those who were able to speak German only were 10% , the students who could spoke Spanish were totally 20% and if we take a look to the percentage of the students who were only able to speak English was 30% recorded. While another language speakers were on the 10%.

In 2010, there was a little difference brought to the record as the percentage of the students those could not spoke other language than the English was still at the highest which was strictly 35% as was increased 5% than the 2000 in 2010. and the least was the German only was still at the same percentage as 2000 which was dramatically 10%. while the Spanish and French were the same on 10% another language was 20% and the two other languages spoken by the students was 15%.😊

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the highest and lowest categories. However, the data reporting is inconsistent and contains inaccuracies. For instance, you state that 'only English' was 30% in 2000, but the chart shows 30% for 'two other languages' and 20% for 'only English'. Furthermore, the description of the 2010 data is confusing, particularly the claim that 'only English' was 35% when the chart indicates 35% for 'two other languages'. While you attempt to make comparisons, the misinterpretation of the data significantly impacts the accuracy of the summary. To improve, ensure you carefully cross-reference the labels with the corresponding bars before writing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused. Phrases like 'Well, as we take a look at' are too informal for an Academic Task 1 response. Additionally, the transition between ideas is sometimes abrupt, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the link between the categories and their percentages is muddled. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they are used in a formal, academic context would enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'take a look at' and 'there was a little difference brought to the record'. There are also instances of word-choice errors, such as 'strictly 35%' and 'dramatically 10%', which are not appropriate collocations for describing statistical data. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the range is not sufficient to demonstrate flexibility or precision. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'remained stable', 'experienced a slight increase', or 'accounted for'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('The both charts illustrates', 'students those could not spoke'), incorrect verb forms ('could spoke'), and awkward sentence structures. While you attempt some complex sentences, they are often faulty, leading to a lack of control. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences lacking proper capitalization or ending with unnecessary symbols. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring that verbs agree with their subjects and that tense usage is consistent throughout the report.
