The charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English, in 2000 and 2010

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie chart compares the proportions of British students at one university in England who could speak languages other than English in 2000 and 2010.

Overall, the students speaking only English accounted for the largest proportion in both 2000 and 2010. The percentages of students speaking another language and two other languages increased, whereas the figure for students speaking French and Spanish declined. Meanwhile, the students speaking German remained same in both years.

The proportion of students speaking only English increased drastically from 30% in 2000 to 35% in 2010. The percentages of those speaking atleast one other language rose from 15% in 2000 to 20% in 2010, while the figure for students speaking two other languages went up from 10% in 2000 to 15% in 2010.

The proportion of students speaking Spanish declined from 20% in 2000 to 10% in 2010. Similarly, the figure for those speaking French fell from 15% in 2000 to 10% in 2010. Meanwhile, the proportion of students speaking German remained unchanged at 10% in both years.
