Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given pie chart illustrates the comparison between the proportion of British learners capable of speaking additional languages at a university in England in the two years that is, 2000 and 2010.
Overall, it is crystal clear that the majority of learners were not interested in learning any other language in both the years. Moreover, there were various fluctuations in the proportion of different languages in the two years.
To start with, in the year 2000, the proportion of Spanish speakers was 20%, which was relatively higher, than that of the proportion in the year 2010 with 10%. Furthermore, the proportion of French speakers was 15% in the year 2000 which had been dropped in the percentage and reached to 10% by the year 2010. However, German speakers had remained the same throughout both the years which was 10% of learners.
Additionally, in the year 2000, 15% of mentee were learning another language which had been inclined to 20% in the year 2010. 10% of students were learning two other languages in the year 2000, which had been raised to 15% by the year 2010. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task and provides a clear overview of the main trends. You successfully identified the key categories and made relevant comparisons between 2000 and 2010. However, the analysis could be improved by grouping the data more effectively rather than listing each category sequentially. For instance, you could have contrasted the declining categories (French, Spanish) with the increasing ones (other languages, two languages) to create a more analytical summary. The data points are accurately reported, and the overall summary is well-supported by the figures provided in the charts.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'To start with', 'Furthermore', and 'Additionally' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more sophisticated by grouping related trends together. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be smoother to avoid a list-like structure. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'fluctuations', and 'categories'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as using 'mentee' to refer to students, which is contextually inappropriate. Additionally, phrases like 'had been inclined to' are not the most natural collocations for describing statistical trends. While you attempt to use a variety of words, the precision is occasionally lacking. Expanding your repertoire of reporting verbs and trend-related adjectives would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'in the two years that is, 2000 and 2010' (should be 'that is, 2000 and 2010') and 'had been dropped in the percentage' (passive voice misuse). Some tense usage is also inconsistent, such as 'had been inclined to' when describing a simple change over time. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the response.
