Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the task but fails to provide a clear overview or identify significant trends. The data is presented as a list of individual figures rather than a comparative summary. For example, stating 'around 20 students can speak Spanish' without contextualizing the percentages or the overall shift between 2000 and 2010 limits the analysis. The response lacks a clear introduction and conclusion, and the information is not synthesized effectively to highlight the main features, such as the increase in students who cannot speak any other language. Consequently, the response is descriptive rather than analytical.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response lacks logical paragraphing, appearing as a single block of text. While there is a basic attempt to sequence information by year, the transition between ideas is mechanical and repetitive, using phrases like 'the second chart is the from 2010'. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link sentences or compare data points effectively. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall structure does not facilitate a smooth progression of information, making the report feel disjointed and informal.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic structures such as 'students can speak' and 'the chart shows'. There is no attempt to use a range of vocabulary appropriate for describing data, such as 'proportion', 'percentage', 'fluctuated', or 'remained constant'. The phrasing is often unnatural, such as 'other language than english' instead of 'languages other than English'. The lack of variety in word choice significantly restricts the ability to convey the information with precision or academic tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response relies almost entirely on simple sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('students can speaks', '10 can speaks') and missing articles ('according to chart'). Punctuation is also problematic, with a lack of capitalization at the start of sentences and run-on structures. While the meaning is generally understandable, the lack of complex sentence forms and the high frequency of basic errors prevent the response from reaching a higher band score.
