Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student attempts to address the task by summarizing the two pie charts showing the proportions of British students speaking other languages in 2000 and 2010. While the main features are touched upon, the response suffers from a lack of precise data reporting. Phrases like 'less than a third' and 'a fifth' are used, but exact percentages or clear comparisons are poorly executed. Furthermore, some data points are misinterpreted or expressed very vaguely, such as 'the ratio of no other language can be seen higher'. The overview is somewhat weak and lacks clarity regarding the overall trends. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, leading to a Band 5.5 score under the official descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organized into four paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, the logical progression is hindered by awkward transitions and confusing sentence structures, such as 'To commence' and 'Going into the depth'. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes incorrectly. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks internal cohesion, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of information smoothly. Reference words are sometimes ambiguous. Therefore, the overall organization fits the Band 5.0 descriptor for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student displays a limited and repetitive vocabulary with frequent spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'langagues', 'augmentation', 'propotion', and 'sligh'. While there is an attempt to use vocabulary related to data reporting (e.g., 'proportion', 'decline'), the execution is marred by inaccuracies. Less common lexical items are either misused or prone to spelling mistakes. Vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic topic, but the frequent lexical errors restrict the score to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many attempts at complexity result in severe grammatical faults. Examples include 'the percentage of no other language is being less than a third' and 'the propotion of no other language... is to become greater'. Frequent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions are evident throughout the text. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader, aligning the response with the Band 5.0 descriptors for grammatical range and accuracy.
