Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main features of the charts comparing the proportions of British students able to speak other languages in 2000 and 2010. However, there are significant inaccuracies in data reporting and misinterpretation of categories. For instance, the student states that 'English made up of the largest shares' and mentions 'English only' rising to 35%, whereas the chart categories actually refer to 'No other language' (monolingual speakers). Additionally, there are conflicting statements about French, such as 'French and another language both holds the total 30%' in 2000, and contradictory figures reported for 2010 where French is said to have increased to 20% and later dipped to 10% (the actual figure being 10%). While an overview is attempted, the confusion over categories and data points limits the task response to a Band 5.0 level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into a four-paragraph structure, including an introduction, overview, and two body paragraphs covering the respective years. However, progression and cohesion are hindered by poor referencing, typographical errors, and mechanical linking. Sentences within the body paragraphs feel disjointed, such as 'followed bby 205 Spanish' (typographical error for 20%) and abrupt transitions between data points without smooth cohesive devices. Paragraphing is present, but overall logical flow is weakened by the numerous inaccuracies and repetitive sentence structures ('holds the total', 'stayed at 10% each'). Cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, fitting the Band 5 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student attempts some subject-specific vocabulary such as 'proportion', 'upward trend', and 'majority', but the range is very limited and heavily compromised by inaccurate word choices and spelling errors. Examples of lexical and spelling errors include 'bby' (by), '205' (20%), 'combining totoal' (combining total), 'Spanich' (Spanish), and 'lannguauge' (language). Furthermore, the student confuses the category labels ('English' instead of 'No other language'). These noticeable errors and limited control of appropriate terminology restrict the lexical score to Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on the positive interpretation of minimally adequate range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the grammar is plagued by frequent errors that occasionally impede understanding. Examples include subject-verb agreement and structural errors such as 'the proportion of students in one university in England those who speak other language', 'French and another language both holds the total 30%', and 'user of Spanich language dropped to 10% halved of last decade'. Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent, with run-on sentences and fragmented expressions ('surge in two other language to15%'). Because errors are frequent and cause difficulty for the reader, the grammar performance aligns with Band 5.0.
