Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to summarise the main features of the two pie charts showing the proportions of British students able to speak other languages in 2000 and 2010. However, there are significant factual inaccuracies regarding the data. For instance, the student states that the charts represent the years 2000 and 2001 instead of 2010, and misreports that Spanish, German, and French became the least spoken languages in 2010 when German actually remained at 10% and 'another language' rose to 20%. While an overview is attempted, the misinterpretation of data and missing comparisons limit the effectiveness of the response, aligning it with a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organised into paragraphs, though the logical progression is frequently disrupted by poor sequencing and repetitive phrasing. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'Firstly, In the 2000'S' and 'In comparision,' which appear multiple times with incorrect punctuation and spacing. Paragraphing is attempted, but the body paragraphs are disjointed and fail to present a clear, progressive comparison between the two years. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the mechanical repetition of certain transitional phrases impacts the overall flow, placing this criterion at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms like 'students', 'languages', and 'percentage'. There are several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'british' (uncapitalized), 'comparision', 'higest', 'laguages', and 'varoius'. The student attempts less common vocabulary like 'monolingual' and 'bilingual', which shows some lexical potential, but frequent spelling mistakes and inaccuracies in collocation ('two other different languages') restrict the score to Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are numerous punctuation errors, including missing spaces after commas and periods (e.g., 'german only.In comparision, even though...'), lack of capitalization for proper nouns ('british', 'english', 'spanish', 'french', 'german'), and subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'pie-Charts illustrates', 'amount of student did not learn'). Attempted complex structures often contain errors that cause difficulty for the reader, resulting in a Band 5.0.
