Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarise the main features of the charts, noting key proportions such as the percentages for 'No other language' and various specific languages in 2000 and 2010. However, the task achievement is constrained in a few ways. First, the word count is 146 words, narrowly missing the 150-word minimum requirement, which leads to a minor penalty under Task Achievement guidelines. Second, the data reporting is somewhat repetitive and contains awkward phrasing, such as 'No other language is the highest speak language it is 30%.' While comparisons are made between the two years, the overall summary lacks a polished overview, and the description of the data points is overly mechanical, falling short of a well-developed response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text is organised into four brief paragraphs, providing a basic structure with an introduction, an overview attempt, and two body paragraphs detailing the years 2000 and 2010. However, paragraphing and logical progression are hindered by mechanical transitions like 'Coming to 2010' and repetitive sentence patterns. Cohesive devices are minimal and often misused or omitted entirely. For example, the sentence 'German and two other languages is the lowest one it is 10% respectively' demonstrates faulty referencing and cohesion. Overall, the arrangement is somewhat coherent, but progression is weak.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses a very basic and repetitive vocabulary range, heavily relying on words directly copied from the prompt such as 'percentage', 'British students', 'languages', and 'pie chart'. There are frequent lexical errors and awkward word combinations, such as 'able to talk other languages', 'highest speak language', and 'lowest able yo speak other languages to English'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with inaccuracy, and spelling errors ('yo' instead of 'to') occur. The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task but causes some strain for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response shows a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or poorly constructed compound statements, and attempts at complex structures are generally faulty. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('No other language... is highest one', 'German... is the lowest one') and missing prepositions or incorrect verb forms ('are able to talk'). Punctuation is basic, and while meaning can generally be deciphered, the frequency of errors causes significant difficulty for the reader.
