Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by presenting an overview and reporting the main features of both pie charts. The student appropriately compares the data between 2000 and 2010, noting key trends such as the increase in students speaking no other language and the decline in Spanish and French speakers. The selection of data is accurate, with precise figures cited from the charts, such as the rise in 'no other language' from 30% to 35% and the drop in Spanish from 20% to 10%. The overview clearly captures the main direction of change. To reach the highest bands, the student could extend the analysis slightly further by drawing deeper comparisons across categories rather than listing the figures sequentially, although the response already provides a well-supported and clear summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The essay is divided into an appropriate number of paragraphs, beginning with a clear introductory sentence, followed by an overall summary paragraph, and then breaking down the specific details for the years 2000 and 2010 respectively. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'At the same time', 'In 2000', 'By 2010', and 'In contrast'. Referencing between sentences is generally clear. To achieve a higher band, the student could ensure that transitions between sentences feel slightly more fluid and less mechanical, avoiding occasional formulaic listing of data points.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'proportion', 'percentage', 'decline', and 'remain stable'. However, there are notable spelling errors and minor lexical slips, such as 'brithish' instead of 'British', 'learner' instead of 'learners', 'english' instead of 'English', 'spanish' instead of 'Spanish', and 'tge' instead of 'the'. These errors indicate an attempt to use appropriate topic vocabulary, but spelling inaccuracies and occasional lapses in word choice prevent the score from reaching a higher level. While communication is not impeded, more precision and careful proofreading are needed for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with good attempts at subordinate clauses and comparative structures. There are several error-free sentences, showing reasonable control over basic grammatical patterns. However, some minor punctuation and grammatical inaccuracies persist, such as missing commas after introductory time phrases (e.g., 'In 2000, the largest proportion...') and a minor subject-verb agreement slip ('German language remain unchanged' instead of 'remains' or 'remained'). Overall, the grammar is functional and handles the descriptive task adequately, though punctuation control and complex structure variety need tightening to move up.
