Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response is 7 words short of the 150-word minimum requirement (13 words copied from the task prompt were not counted). While the student attempts to address the task by reporting the main features, such as identifying that students with no other language accounted for the largest proportion in both years (30% in 2000 and 35% in 2010), the coverage is only partial. Several figures are inaccurately reported or confusingly phrased, such as stating that 'German Language was remian same' when the chart indicates German only was 10% in both years, and describing Spanish as the 'second largest speak language' while missing some key comparative highlights. Ideas are limited and under-developed, preventing the response from achieving a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text displays some organisation with basic paragraphing that separates the introduction, overall summary, and body paragraphs. However, there is no clear overall progression throughout the text. Cohesive devices are minimal, mechanical, and occasionally inaccurate, such as using 'where as' and repetitive sentence structures like 'accounted for'. Referencing and logical sequencing between sentences are sometimes faulty, leading to a choppy reading experience. To improve, the student needs to use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices and ensure logical transitions between ideas to create a smoother flow of information.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic information about the charts. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'largest number of proportion', 'remian same', and 'second largest speak language'. Word formation and spelling errors, such as 'remian' for 'remained', cause some difficulty and distraction for the reader. The student attempts to use some less common reporting terms like 'proportion' and 'increased', but imprecise collocation and lack of lexical control restrict the range and accuracy of the expression, keeping it at this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student uses a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic subject-verb-complement patterns. Attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, featuring frequent grammatical errors such as missing articles ('in english', 'in 200'), incorrect prepositions ('reached at 35 %'), and subject-verb agreement issues. Punctuation is also neglected, with missing full stops at the end of sentences and inconsistent spacing around percentages. These frequent errors in grammar and punctuation can cause difficulty and confusion for the reader, which is characteristic of this level of grammatical control.
