Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response only partially addresses the prompt and fails to meet the minimum length requirement, being 3 words short of the 150-word minimum (excluding copied prompt text). While the writer attempts to present an overview and report some data from the charts, the information selected is frequently inaccurate or confused. For instance, the student states that 'Spain and French was of (20-15%) at the beginning', misinterpreting the separate categories for Spanish and French. The overview is overly simplistic, and key trends are not clearly or accurately summarised, placing this criterion at the current level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The text is organised into paragraphs, and the writer attempts to use logical connectors such as 'Overall', 'On the one hand', and 'On the other hand'. However, the overall progression is unclear and mechanical. Referencing is frequently confusing, and cohesive devices are inadequate or misused, resulting in a lack of smooth flow. For example, transitioning between unrelated categories makes the relationships between the data points difficult to follow. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within the paragraphs remains faulty.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with noticeable errors that cause some difficulty for the reader. The writer relies heavily on basic terms and simple descriptive phrases. There are inaccuracies in word choice and data reporting language, such as writing 'Spain' instead of 'Spanish' and confusing specific language categories. Spelling and word forms are generally basic, and attempts at less common vocabulary are limited, restricting the response to an adequate yet restricted lexical range suitable for this band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student uses a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside poorly controlled attempts at complex forms. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies ('The two chart below illustrated', 'it remain same'), subject-verb agreement issues, and awkward prepositional phrases ('intotal in 2010'). These frequent errors and faulty structures cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted grammatical control.
