Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the two charts and attempts an overview, but it reports very little of the information needed to summarise them. The statement that German was spoken at a similar rate is broadly accurate: German only accounted for 10% in both years. However, “maximum students were speaking english language” misreads the largest category, which was students reporting no other language, not English as an additional language. The response omits the main changes, including Spanish falling from 20% to 10%, while another language and two other languages rose. It is also substantially below the required 150 words, leaving the task only minimally addressed. Include a clear overview and select several accurate comparisons from both charts.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening sentence introduces the charts, followed by a separate paragraph beginning “Overall”. This gives the reader a simple structure, and “In contrast” signals a relationship between ideas. However, the response ends after two short paragraphs and does not develop a logical sequence of comparisons. The contrast marker is also not well matched to the claim that German was similar in both years. To improve, use an overview paragraph to state the main trends, then organise the details by categories that increased, decreased, or stayed unchanged. Clear links such as “by comparison” and “whereas” can help connect accurate data without making the progression feel abrupt.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary is sufficient to identify the chart type and topic, with phrases such as “pie charts”, “percentage” and “in both years”. However, the range is narrow, and some choices are imprecise or awkward for describing the data. “Maximum students” does not clearly express the largest proportion, while “speaking multiple languages” suggests more than one additional language and does not accurately describe all chart categories. The response also repeats basic terms rather than using language for change and comparison. Build a small set of precise Task 1 expressions, such as “accounted for”, “rose”, “fell” and “remained unchanged”, and use them with the relevant categories and figures.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response uses simple sentence forms and attempts an overview sentence, but grammatical control is uneven. In “The two pie charts compares”, the plural subject requires “compare”. The phrase “german language spoke similarly by students” has an incorrect verb construction; a clearer form would be “the proportion speaking German remained the same”. Capitalisation and punctuation also need attention, as in “french and spanish in England In 2000 and 2010”. The limited number of sentences makes it difficult to demonstrate a wider range of structures. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and comparison clauses, for example, “Spanish fell from 20% to 10%, whereas German remained at 10%.”
