Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

You identify the topic and include some relevant figures, such as 30% with no other language in 2000 and 20% speaking Spanish. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: Spanish was not the largest spoken-language category in 2000, and the response does not summarise the main change by 2010, when the no-other-language group rose to 35% while Spanish and French fell. The comparison of German and two other languages is left unfinished, and there is no usable account of the 2010 chart. The response is also substantially below the required 150 words, leaving the task only minimally addressed. To improve, provide a clear overview and compare the key categories in both years, using accurate figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening statement is followed by a paragraph beginning “In 2000,” and “Overall” signals an overview. These features give the reader some sense of structure. However, progression is limited because the overview does not clearly state the main trends, and the body stops mid-sentence at “German and other two languages,” leaving the comparison incomplete. Linking is also awkward in “While, Spanish spoken…” and “In contrast,” which does not lead to a completed contrast. Organise the report into a concise introduction, a clear overview, and complete comparison paragraphs covering both years. Use linking words only where the relationship between the figures is clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “largest,” “spoken,” and “in contrast,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, spelling errors are frequent and sometimes obscure meaning, for example “illusrates,” “Birtish,” “Oveeral,” “lanuages,” and “Spansih.” Several expressions are also imprecise or unnatural, such as “the languages spoken are … among the pupils” and “Spanish spoken at 20%.” Use accurate chart-reporting phrases such as “the proportion of students speaking Spanish” and “accounted for.” Check spelling carefully, and distinguish “another language” from “two other languages” when describing the categories.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts a few different sentence forms, including an opening comparison and a sentence beginning “While,” but control is uneven. For example, “The pie charts illustrates” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “between 2000 to 2010” uses an incorrect preposition pattern. “While, Spanish spoken at 20%” is not a complete clause, and “French and another language stands” has agreement problems. The final sentence is unfinished, which also prevents the comparison from being expressed clearly. Build accurate simple sentences first, then add subordinate clauses where appropriate. For example: “In 2000, 30% spoke no other language, while Spanish was the most common additional language, at 20%.”
