Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the two years and report several relevant figures, including the rise in “No other language” from 30% to 35% and the increase in “Another language” and “Two other languages.” However, key data are misreported: Spanish was 20% in 2000, not 10%, and French fell from 15% to 10%. The overview also incorrectly calls French, Spanish and German the least common categories, although “No other language” is the largest in both years. The explanation that people were “not open to other cultures” is unsupported by the charts. The response contains 138 words, below the 150-word minimum. Include a clearer, accurate overview and develop comparisons using the chart data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic attempt at organisation: an opening, an overview, and paragraphs comparing the two years. Phrases such as “in one hand” and “in the other hand” signal a contrast, and the reader can identify some of the categories being discussed. However, the progression is difficult to follow because several figures and categories are grouped in long, awkward lists, and the comparisons are not consistently expressed as complete, connected ideas. The final explanation about cultural openness also interrupts the chart summary. Use one paragraph for the main overview and separate paragraphs for clear comparisons, linking each figure directly to its category and year.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “percentage,” “compared with,” and “increased,” so the basic subject is recognisable. However, the range is limited and many spelling errors make the report harder to read, for example “proprtions,” “britch,” “spainch,” “languge,” and “diffrent.” Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “the most percentage,” “the percentage are fell,” and “spent most.” Choose standard chart language such as “the largest proportion,” “fell to,” and “accounted for.” Check spelling carefully and use the same accurate category labels as the chart, including “French only” and “No other language.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts a few longer structures, including comparisons introduced by “compared with” and a concluding clause beginning “because,” but most sentences rely on simple or incomplete patterns. Errors are frequent and sometimes obscure the intended relationships: “the most percentage is in other language” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “french is fell then in 2000” uses an incorrect verb form and comparison. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, as in “the percentage are fell.” Build accurate simple sentences first—for example, “The proportion speaking French fell from 15% to 10%”—then add a small number of correctly formed comparison clauses. Use consistent punctuation and capitalisation.
