Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the topic and attempts an overview, but it does not accurately report the main pattern. The statement that the “majority of the learners only spoke English” is incorrect: students speaking no other language made up 30% in 2000 and 35% in 2010, not a majority in either year. No category figures or comparisons are included, so the changes in Spanish (20% to 10%), French (15% to 10%), and other languages (15% to 20%) are missed. The response is also substantially below the required 150 words, leaving the task only minimally addressed. To improve, give a clear, accurate overview and support it with selected figures and comparisons from both charts.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic two-part structure: an opening sentence introduces the charts, followed by a separate overview beginning “Overall”. This gives the reader a simple starting point, but there is no further progression because the response contains no detailed comparisons or supporting information. The link between the two sentences is also limited, and the overview does not lead into any organised account of the data. Develop the response into an introduction, an overview, and one or two paragraphs grouping related categories or changes. Use clear links such as “By contrast” or “Meanwhile” to show how the figures relate, rather than relying on paragraph breaks alone.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “pie charts”, “scholars”, “university”, and “languages”, so the general subject can be understood. However, the vocabulary is limited and some choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this task. “Scholars” does not describe the students shown, and “data of scholars” is an awkward way to introduce the information. The phrase “spoke other languages in addition with English” also uses an unsuitable collocation. Use precise chart language such as “proportion of students” and “could speak another language”, and include terms for reporting change, such as “increased”, “fell”, and “remained unchanged”.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response communicates its basic topic through two simple sentences, but grammatical control is uneven. In “The pie charts compares”, the plural subject requires “compare”; in “about they can spoke”, the clause structure and verb form are incorrect; and “in addition with English” uses the wrong preposition. The overview sentence, “it is clearly seen that majority…”, also needs an article before “majority”. The writing relies on simple sentence patterns and does not demonstrate a wider range of structures. Practise accurate introductory clauses and comparisons—for example, “The charts compare the proportions of students who could speak other languages in 2000 and 2010”—before attempting more varied sentences.
