Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the topic and attempts an overview, but it reports very little of the chart information and does not make the comparisons needed to summarise the two years. The statement that students speaking no other language “dramatically inreased” is inaccurate: this group rose only from 30% to 35%. The claim that the two-language group “stable dicreased” is also unclear and conflicts with the data, which show an increase from 10% to 15%. No figures are given for the other categories, and the final sentence is incomplete and repeats the no-other-language point. The response is also 91 words below the required minimum. To improve, give a clear overview and accurately compare the main changes across both charts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response, beginning with an introduction and then an overview, so the reader can recognise the intended structure. However, the response stops before developing a coherent summary: the final sentence, “No other languages spoken students steadily declined 30 % in 2000,” is incomplete and does not clearly connect to the preceding point. The ideas also contradict one another, as the overview says the no-other-language group increased while the next sentence says it declined. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and key comparisons, and connect each comparison clearly to its year and category. This would create a more logical progression rather than a series of disconnected statements.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “proportions,” “students,” and “language,” and attempts to describe change with “increased” and “declined.” However, the range is narrow and several phrases are inaccurate or awkward, such as “other English languages,” “two other language spoken students,” and “dramatically inreased.” The spelling error in “inreased” and the misspelling “dicreased” also reduce accuracy. Choose concise chart language, for example, “students who spoke no other language” and “the proportion rose slightly.” Avoid repeating “students” where a category label is clearer. More accurate vocabulary for categories and trends would make the limited information easier to understand.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts simple statements and an overview, but grammatical control is inconsistent. In the opening, “The two different charts illustrates” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “students between England who able to speak” is missing necessary grammatical elements. The phrase “no other language spoken students” also has an unclear word order, while “the two other language spoken students stable dicreased” lacks a correctly formed verb phrase. The final sentence is incomplete, with no clear subject–verb structure for the reported figure. These errors make several meanings difficult to follow. Practise complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement, articles, and plural forms before writing.
