Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the topic and make an attempt at an overview, but the response reports very few of the chart’s main features and includes a significant misreading: students speaking only English were not the largest group in both years; the “no other language” share rose from 30% to 35%, while Spanish fell from 20% to 10%. You mention German and Spanish, but do not clearly compare the full distributions or report the changes in French and the other-language categories. The response is also only 62 words, below the required 150, so there is not enough detail to summarise the charts adequately. To improve, give a clear overview and support it with accurate comparisons and key figures for both years.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response has a basic beginning and an overview-like statement, and it uses “Overall” and “On the other hand” to signal relationships. However, the ideas are not arranged into a clear, developed summary: the second sentence combines several claims about German and Spanish without a clear sequence, and the comparison between years is difficult to follow. There is no separate body paragraph presenting the figures in a logical order. Organise the response into an introduction, an overview, and one or two paragraphs comparing the main categories. Use linking expressions only where they accurately show the relationship between the information.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary such as “proportions,” “speak,” and “percentage,” so the basic topic is understandable. However, the range is limited and some expressions are imprecise or repetitive, including “speak only english language” and “German language percentage.” Capitalisation is also inconsistent for “English,” “German,” and “Spanish.” More accurate category labels would help distinguish students who speak no other language from those who speak another language. Build a small set of precise terms for describing chart categories and change, such as “accounted for,” “share,” “rose,” and “fell,” and use them with the correct language names.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a complex sentence with “On the other hand,” but most of the writing relies on simple structures, and errors sometimes make the relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “The pie charts illustrates” has subject–verb disagreement, while “only 10 percent of student were able” has a plural agreement error. The sentence beginning “Overall” also runs several claims together, with missing spaces after full stops and unclear punctuation around “but.” Practise accurate sentence patterns such as “The proportion of students speaking German remained at 10%” and “Spanish fell from 20% to 10%.” Clearer sentence boundaries and agreement would improve control.
