Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the charts’ subject and include an overview, noting that the share with no other language was highest and increased by 2010. However, the overview is partly inaccurate: in 2000, Spanish was 20%, not French or another language at a similar level, and in 2010 Spanish fell to 10%. The detailed figures also contain major errors. You say that 20% learned French, Spanish and German in 2010, whereas the chart shows 10% for each; 20% refers to another language. The response therefore reports only some key features accurately and does not adequately compare the two years. It is also 144 words, six short of the 150-word minimum; the 12 words copied from the task prompt are excluded.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs giving details. This helps the reader recognise that you are describing two charts and attempting to summarise their main features. However, the progression is limited because the final two paragraphs both focus on 2010, while the 2000 figures receive little detailed treatment. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In year 2010,” and “By 2010” are used, but the repeated time references do not create a clear comparison between years. Some connections are also awkward, particularly the long list of categories in the third paragraph. Organise the details by comparing changes across years, rather than listing figures for one year at a time.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “figures,” and “increased,” so the topic is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, especially “language” and “percentage.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, such as “langauges,” “proprotion,” and “leran,” which reduce accuracy and can distract the reader. Some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, for example “the figures for Spanish language was” and “learn other language”; the chart describes students’ ability to speak languages, not whether they learned them. Aim for accurate, varied terms such as “the proportion who could speak” and “the share speaking another language.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, and the reader can usually understand the intended meaning. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors occur frequently in agreement, articles, plurals, and punctuation. For example, “The chart illustrate” needs subject–verb agreement, while “35 percent student did not learn other language” needs plural forms and appropriate articles. The sentence beginning “In year 2010” also contains several clauses joined without clear grammatical control, making the comparison difficult to follow. There are missing spaces after full stops and commas, as in “2010.In” and “Overall, the.” Practise accurate basic sentence patterns before combining several figures in one sentence.
