IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.

To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Recycling is crucial for the world. The waste from home is not recycled enough and it is claimed by some people. They say governments should take legal action to increase recycling. I mostly agree with this statement because people will be obligate to follow the action which will be taken by government and recycling will increase. Though people might need to aware themselves about recycling for the betterment of our environment.

Firstly, nowadays circular economy is an essential topic and recycling is one of the processes to achieve this. There are many wastes which produced through homes. But all of those waste are not recylced due to the ignorance of people. Not only people but also the government is responsible which results the unused waste materials. For eample, the home waste that is taken by workers of city corporation doesn't properly maintained for further use. We dumped our kitchen waste or everything without separating them into different segments like biodegradable waste and polythene. So, it becomes tough for recycling. If government take proper steps to distinguish every waste categorically and make it mandatory and give punishment if anayone rejects it to do so. Recycling will be enhanced gradually. Because people do care what the government says.

Nevertheless, we also need to aware about recycling. It is our duty to keep our environment healthy. Recyling will decrease our demand for environmental resources from exploitation.

In conclusion, the waste of home is not recycled enough and government should take proper step to incease it. On the other hand, people might need to aware themselves for recycling.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is identifiable: you mostly support legal requirements, while also noting that people need awareness. You give relevant reasons, including household waste being mixed together and the possibility of penalties encouraging compliance, and the city-corporation example helps connect the discussion to waste collection. However, the response addresses the question only partially because the case for laws is asserted more than explained, and the alternative role of public education is mentioned briefly but not developed. The claim that people “do care what the government says” is broad and unsupported. Explain how a specific rule, such as separating waste, would work and why it would increase recycling, then develop the education point to clarify the extent of your agreement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a main paragraph supporting regulation, a contrasting paragraph about awareness, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Nevertheless,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. However, progression within the main paragraph is sometimes unclear: it moves from circular economy to household waste collection, then to sorting and punishment without consistently showing how each point supports the central claim. Some links are mechanical, and “Because people do care what the government says” is left as a fragment rather than integrated into the preceding idea. Use clearer cause-and-effect links and develop each paragraph around one main point; also make references such as “this” and “it” more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-specific vocabulary, including “circular economy,” “biodegradable waste,” “polythene,” and “environmental resources,” which gives the response relevant language for the subject. There are also attempts at less common phrasing, such as “for the betterment of our environment.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive, and several spelling errors reduce control: “recylced,” “eample,” “anayone,” “Recyling,” and “incease.” Phrases such as “the waste from home,” “take legal action,” and “decrease our demand for environmental resources from exploitation” are unclear or unnatural in context. Build accuracy by learning common collocations for waste management and checking spelling, while choosing direct expressions over elaborate but imprecise wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex structures, including “If government take proper steps … Recycling will be enhanced gradually” and the paired construction “Not only people but also the government…”. However, control is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. Examples include “people will be obligate,” “There are many wastes which produced,” and “all of those waste are not recylced,” where verb forms and agreement are faulty. The conditional sentence also needs a consistent structure, and “Though people might need to aware themselves” lacks a grammatical form after “need.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation are sometimes problematic, as in the fragment “Because people do care…”. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, verb patterns, and complete complex sentences before adding further complexity.
