IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Nowadays, it has been a considerable debate in many countries that recycling process should be a part of governments legal requirement. While some assert that it is enough to recycle at homes, others suggest to take action from the governments. I believe, recycling from homes would not be able to manage and maintain a sustainable process. This essay will elaborate the principal reasons before reaching a conclusion that taking action from the government can make an enornmous change.
One of the major reasons is that a large number of people negleted the recycling process. While it will be a part of legel requirments, it will play a pivotal role in countries. If goverments place some individuals bins such as one for plastic, one for glass and one is for other garbage, it will facilitate to recycle more. Furthermore, people will follow the rules because it is mandatory. For example, a considerable number of people do not interested to recycling from the wastages while it plays a crucial role. As a result, people are facing environmental problems.
On the other hand, if goverments take a legal action , it will accelerate the process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You take a position in favour of government action, stating that household recycling alone cannot sustain the process, and you give relevant ideas such as providing separate bins and making recycling mandatory. However, the response addresses the question only partially: the claim that laws are the only way to increase recycling is not examined, and the opposing view is introduced but not developed. The example about people not being interested in recycling is general and does not show how a law would change their behaviour. The final paragraph is only one sentence and adds no supporting reason. The response also falls 58 words short of the required minimum, leaving the argument substantially underdeveloped. Extend your position with specific explanations and examples, and address how far laws are necessary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a recognisable introduction, a main paragraph, and a brief concluding direction, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “As a result” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, progression is limited: the second paragraph moves from neglecting recycling to bins and then environmental problems without clearly explaining the links. The opening mentions two views, but the essay does not go on to organise or compare them. The paragraph beginning “On the other hand” signals contrast, yet it contains only one undeveloped sentence and does not function as a complete paragraph. Build a clear sequence—position, reason, explanation, example—and use paragraphing to develop each main point rather than relying on signposting alone.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some topic-related vocabulary and attempt less common expressions, including “sustainable process,” “pivotal role,” “facilitate,” and “accelerate the process.” These choices show an effort to discuss recycling beyond basic terms. However, several word-choice and collocation problems make parts of the argument awkward, such as “recycling process should be a part of governments legal requirement,” “individuals bins,” and “do not interested to recycling.” Spelling errors, including “enornmous,” “negleted,” and “legel,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural combinations and check spelling carefully; for example, use “make recycling a legal requirement,” “provide separate bins,” and “are not interested in recycling.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex forms, including a conditional sentence beginning “If governments place…” and a subordinate clause with “While.” This gives the response some structural variety. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make the reader pause. Examples include “it has been a considerable debate” (the construction should be “there has been considerable debate”), “people do not interested” (missing the correct verb form), and “one is for other garbage” (unclear agreement and structure). There are also problems with articles, possessives, and punctuation, as in “governments legal requirement” and the space before the comma in “action ,”. Practise accurate basic clauses first, then build longer sentences and proofread each for subject–verb structure.
