Student answer (Band 7.0)
A thought of being stressed due to longer working hours has become increasingly common. This is because change in lifestyle has taken mammoth dimensions. This essay will elucidate the driving factors of this trend and will give feasible solutions to curb the situation.
To commence with, reasons behind the phenomenon of working longer hours are high career ambitions and rising costs of living. To expound, the employees who wish to reach the pinnacle of success have to make their way through the fierce competition within the organization. In order to do so, they take upon extra responsibilities to show their abilities which puts them in a formidable situation and they are left with no other choice but to put in extra hours at work. What is more, the escalating living costs in modern times has forced the workers to take upon longer work shifts. Since they are being paid hourly, some additional hours of work means they will get extra money on top of the standard pay which will help them to run their households smoothly.
To address the second question, the plausible solutions are hybrid workplace culture and strict enforcement of labour laws. To elaborate, employers can provide the flexibility to work from home which will bring humongous change in the lifestyle of employees. While working from home will save their daily commute time it will also give them riveting experience to stay close to family. Furthermore, employers should strictly comply with the regulations of the labour ministry and discourage the practice of overtime by their employees. They should focus on the quality rather than quantity of the work done by employees while giving them incentives and rewards. Thus, aforementioned steps substantiate how the problem can be solved.
To conclude, this essay has clearly discussed that strong career aspirations and growing inflation are the reasons for the trend of extended work schedules, it has also highlighted ardent steps such as flexible working arrangement and labor law enforcement are required to tackle this trend.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for an opinion on whether governments should make recycling a legal requirement. However, your essay discusses the causes and solutions for long working hours and workplace stress. Because you have failed to address the prompt entirely, the task achievement score is severely impacted. In an actual exam, this would result in a very low score for Task Response as the content is irrelevant to the specific question asked. To improve, you must carefully read the prompt and ensure your ideas directly answer the specific question provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is well-structured with clear paragraphing and logical progression. You use cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'What is more', and 'To conclude' effectively to link your ideas. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, and the flow of information is logical. While the content is irrelevant to the prompt, the internal organization of the text is strong and demonstrates a good grasp of how to structure an academic essay.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using sophisticated terms such as 'elucidate', 'pinnacle', 'formidable', and 'substantiate'. The word choice is generally precise and appropriate for an academic context. There are no significant spelling errors, and your use of collocations is mostly natural. While the vocabulary is strong, it is being used to discuss the wrong topic, which limits the overall effectiveness of your lexical range in relation to the task requirements.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Your grammar is generally accurate, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You demonstrate control over complex grammatical forms, such as conditional-like structures and relative clauses. There are very few errors, and those that exist do not impede communication. Your punctuation is also handled well. The grammatical control is consistent throughout the text, showing a high level of proficiency in sentence construction.
