IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.

To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

we have encountered various societies where people often overuse materials especially beverage and meal packs that are not recycled sufficiently. In addition, governments of those particular states don't have conspicuous constitutional and legal stipulations to manage those resources.

Recycling laws redefines the criteria and their apt interpretations in the form of incentive-based measures, waste recycling and upcycling stimulate environmental safeguards and minimize pollution. For instance, fast fashion trends and transitions generate unused and out-of-trend clothes that get discarded to poor countries. If the government formulate sanctions and counteractive cumbersome tax load on these fashion industries, the over-discard of clothes might be controlled. Similarly, plastic ban policies and green financing for families exercising waste recycling would drive a nation towards an eco-friendly environment. These measures provide a legal cover and countermeasures for polluting the environment.

A swift transition towards legal framework against piles of home-generated waste demands an efficient service delivery model along-with adequate political commitment and civilian activism. However, the states facing these problems are the ones facing political turbulence, policy inconsistencies and a weak fiscal management. Hence, these states in addition with constitutional stipulations demand an active government which would ensure a proactive model instead of a reactive one.

Constitutional and legal frameworks against home waste need to be implemented in third world countries that are at the risk of political turbulence. Only by an active governance model and an inclusive legal framework, waste recycling and upcycling can be made possible.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the role of government legislation in recycling. However, the essay is under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of development. While you present relevant ideas like incentive-based measures and the need for political stability, the argument remains somewhat abstract. To reach a higher band, you need to expand on your examples—for instance, explaining exactly how a 'plastic ban' or 'green financing' would function in practice. The position is clear, but the lack of word count and limited elaboration on the 'extent' of the need for laws prevents a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a central focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Similarly', and 'However' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing, such as 'these states in addition with constitutional stipulations demand'. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the transition between the discussion of fashion industries and the broader political context in the third paragraph feels slightly abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, including terms like 'conspicuous', 'stipulations', 'incentive-based', and 'proactive'. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'over-discard of clothes' (better: 'excessive disposal') and 'counteractive cumbersome tax load' (which is slightly unnatural). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and shows an attempt to use more sophisticated, topic-specific language. To improve, focus on ensuring that word combinations sound natural in an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('governments... don't have', 'Recycling laws redefines', 'states... demand') and awkward phrasing ('these states in addition with constitutional stipulations'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not generally impede communication. To achieve a higher band, you should focus on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of prepositions and articles to ensure your complex sentences are error-free.
