IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
According to a few individuals, less garbage from houses is being recycled for which only the national authorities can take strict action in order to improve waste reprocessing systems. I partially agree with this statement because I think individual understanding plays a crucial role in order to make changes.
Waste reclamation should be the responsibility of each citizen in a country. If house owners are aware of the importance of a garbage management system then the process becomes easier to follow. For instance, people should be able to understand how much it is essential to reduce waste to save the environment and waste processing can reduce health problems from each house. Education of the public is vital in order to make them follow the rules.
Furthermore, the government can impose strict regulation against an individual who refuses to follow the garbage reclamation process. For example, a collection of penalties when someone breaks a law. The education system in school should include waste recycling methods so that children can learn from the beginning. The authorities can distribute posters to let people know the use of various color coded garbage bins. Steps can be taken by the government in order to increase garbage bin placement in more areas.
In conclusion, national authorities can take legal action to increase waste recycling process but i think addition of personal education

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both individual responsibility and government regulation. However, the essay is incomplete, ending abruptly in the conclusion without finishing the final sentence. Furthermore, the response is under the 250-word minimum, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the position is clear, the arguments regarding government intervention are somewhat repetitive and lack depth. To improve, you must ensure the essay is fully developed and reaches the required word count. The conclusion should also be a complete paragraph that synthesizes your main points rather than trailing off.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion'. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by the incomplete nature of the final paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical at times. To reach a higher band, ensure that your paragraphs are balanced and that your conclusion provides a definitive summary of your argument without being cut off.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at topic-specific language like 'waste reclamation', 'garbage management system', and 'strict regulation'. However, there is some repetition of basic terms like 'garbage' and 'waste'. Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'collection of penalties' instead of 'imposition of fines'. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Expanding your vocabulary to include more academic synonyms and precise collocations will help improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'less garbage... is being recycled for which only the national authorities can take strict action' and 'the use of various color coded garbage bins'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, though the incomplete final sentence leaves the grammar unfinished. While the errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex sentence structures to improve accuracy.
