IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays, people believe that individuals are not engaged in recycling so, the government should take initiatives to increase awareness towards this issue. I largely agree with this statement and will discuss the reasons behind that in upcoming paragraphs.
The legal restrictions are required to create awareness among individuals regarding this issue. To influence people to adopt eco-friendly activities it is important to make people aware about the consequences of their harmful activities. The legal restrictions helps to increase individual's concern towards the environment. As a result of which people will start adapting the habit of recycling in their daily routine which would further help in creating a good reputation of the country.
Additionally, due to implementta of strict rules and penalties the individuals will strictly follow the regulations in order to prevent themself from paying high amount. For example, in country like India people do not adopt the habit of recycling the waste because the authorities has not taken strict actions regarding this issue. So, in such country it is important to use legal restrictions to force people to adapt environmental friendly practices such as recycling.
However, it depends on the individual mindset how important they perceive their surrounding to be. As, if they value the nature so they will adapt recycling habits without legal enforcement but if they do not value so, they would not even respect governmental regulations.
To conclude, it can be said that governmental regulations helps to create awareness towards the environment along with forceful enforcement of recycling habits but at last it depends up on the individual's mind if they want to adapt those activities or not.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the role of legal enforcement and the influence of individual mindset. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the example regarding India is a bit generic and could have been more effectively linked to the specific mechanism of how laws change behavior. While the response covers all parts of the task, the arguments could be extended with more depth to reach a higher band. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, though it introduces a slight contradiction by suggesting that laws might not work if individuals do not value nature.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Additionally', 'However', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive in their structure. Referencing is generally clear, though there are minor issues with flow between sentences. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'legal restrictions', 'eco-friendly activities', and 'enforcement'. However, there are some errors in word choice and form, such as 'implementta' (a spelling error) and 'the individuals will strictly follow the regulations in order to prevent themself from paying high amount' (which is slightly unnatural). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The legal restrictions helps', 'governmental regulations helps') and article usage ('in country like India'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward phrasings that hinder the flow. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. A greater variety of error-free complex structures would be needed to move into the 7.0 band.
