IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Today, household waste has become a major environmental concern because most of the waste from household is not recycled. Some individuals believe that government should make recycling compulsory to increase the recycling rates. I partially agree with this notion because laws can encourage people to recycle but public awareness and proper recycling facilities are equally important.
To begin with the primary reason behind my agreement is many people do not take recycling seriously. They do not make any attention on these recycling activities. If government initiate strict laws and impose penalties on the resident, they are more likely to separate their household waste and recycle the waste regularly. This would introduce the amount of rubbish on the landfills, conserve resources and future generation can have better environment.
Despite the aforementioned arguments it seems to that in many areas people lacks recycling facilities. They do not have access to proper areas to recycle the waste which makes it difficult for them to recycle the waste even when they are willing to do so. In addition, individuals are not aware about the consequences or adverse effects of not recycling the waste. For example, in India natives have a very less knowledge about the benefits of recycling. Government should alo invest in conducting awareness campaign to educate the public.
In conclusion, I reaffirm that government alone cannot do anything about the about this problem citizens of the country should have to make equal efforts to reduce waste and pollutants from the landfills. by governments laws and individual efforts this problem can be surely tackled.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all parts of the prompt by providing a clear position that recycling laws are beneficial but insufficient on their own. You supported your argument with relevant points regarding public awareness and infrastructure. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention that laws would reduce rubbish in landfills, this point could be expanded with more specific examples of how such legislation functions in other countries. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and could have been used to synthesize your arguments more effectively. Overall, you have provided a relevant response that maintains a consistent position throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Despite the aforementioned arguments', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. There are also minor issues with referencing and flow; for example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is generally clear, though the internal structure of some sentences could be improved to enhance the overall flow of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'environmental concern', 'compulsory', and 'adverse effects'. However, there are instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'make any attention on these recycling activities' (instead of 'pay attention to') and 'natives have a very less knowledge' (instead of 'very little knowledge'). To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider range of less common lexical items and ensure that your collocations are more natural and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'government should make' (missing article 'the'), 'If government initiate' (subject-verb agreement), 'it seems to that' (incorrect structure), and 'by governments laws' (incorrect possessive form). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement, article usage, and sentence construction will help improve your accuracy.
