IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.

To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

RECYCLING PRODUCTS HAS BECOME A MAJOR CONCERN IN TODAY'S WORLD. MANY OF THE WASTE IS MOSTLY FROM RESIDENTIAL AREA AND ALSO INCLUDES INDUSTRIAL ORGANIZATION. HOWEVER, MANY OF THESE ARE NOT RECYCLED APPROPRIATELY AND THUS INVOLVES KEEN ATTENTION BY THE GOVERNMENT AUTHORITIES TO PONDER AND INTRODUCE POLICIES AND LEGAL REQUIREMENTS TO MAINTAIN THE ECO-FRIENDLY NATURE AND SUSTAINABILITY OF THE PLANET.

HOUSEHOLD WASTES ARE NOT TREATED AND COLLECTED IN THE RIGHT WAY. AS PEOPLE HAVE LACK OF KNOWLEDGE IN UNDERSTANDING THE NATURE OF PRODUCTS, IT IS DIFFICULT TO ATTAIN A CLEAN ENVIRONMENT. IN MOST COUNTRIES ACROSS THE GLOBE, COUNCILS HAVE INTRODUCED PARTICULAR BINS FOR WASTE. FOR INSTANCE, GREEN BINS ARE FOR RECYCLING PRODUCTS SUCH AS PLASTIC CANS AND CARDBOARDS. THIS HELPS THE PEOPLE LIVING IN A HOUSE TO UNDERSTAND THE NEED TO SEPARATE SUCH ITEMS. IT GIVES AN IDEA AND THE LEVEL OF CURIOSITY TO KNOW MORE ABOUT IT IN DEPTH EITHER THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA AND BY CAMPAIGNS INTRODUCED FROM THE GOVERNMENT.

IF GOVERMENT BODIES MAKE IT A NECESSITY FOR THE PLANET TO BE CLEAN AND SUSTAINABLE, THEY MUST MAKE IT A COMPULSION FOR EVERY CITIZEN ABIDING BY THE COUNTRY TO FOLLOW THE RULES AND REGULATIONS. CLEAN AND GREEN ENVIRONMENT IS MOSTLY FOLLOWED IN DEVELOPED COUNTRIES SUCH AS SINGAPORE AND JAPAN. A HEAVY FINE IS IMPOSED IN CERTAIN COUNTRIES IF RESIDENTS FAIL TO FOLLOW THE POLICIES AND UNDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE OF RECYCLING. MANY PRODUCTS CAN BE AVAILED FROM A SINGLE ITEM, SUCH AS PAPER WHEN RECYCLED CAN BE TRANSFORMED INTO BOOKS OR BOXES.

IN CONCLUSION, IF LAWS ARE INTRODUCED GLOBALLY WITH REGARDS TO RECYCLING, IT WILL HELP ACHIEVE CLEAN AND GREEN PLANET. THIS WOULD, THEREFORE, HELP IN MAINTAINING OUR PLANET WE LIVE IN BEAUTIFULLY.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the necessity of legal requirements for recycling. You clearly state your position that government intervention is needed to ensure a sustainable environment. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While you mention the use of bins and fines in countries like Japan and Singapore, the connection between these examples and the core argument—whether laws are the 'only' way—could be more deeply explored. You touch upon the importance of education, but the argument remains slightly repetitive. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph contributes a distinct, well-supported point that directly answers the 'to what extent' aspect of the question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However,' 'For instance,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the discussion of bins and the mention of social media is slightly abrupt. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'many of these,' which lacks a precise antecedent. Improving the variety and sophistication of your linking words will help create a more seamless progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'sustainability,' 'compulsion,' and 'residential area.' However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors that slightly hinder precision. For example, 'many of the waste' should be 'much of the waste,' and 'availed from' is used incorrectly in this context. You also use 'industrial organization' where 'industrial waste' or 'commercial sectors' would be more appropriate. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that your word choices are contextually accurate rather than just using complex-sounding words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the quality of the writing. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('many of the waste is'), article usage ('a clean and green environment'), and awkward phrasing ('abiding by the country'). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are slightly clunky. To achieve a higher score, focus on correcting basic subject-verb agreement and article errors, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
