Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.

To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, some part of crowd claims that the current waste recycling practices from home is not enough and to increase it's proportions government should impose recycling waste to be a legal requirement. In my opinion, laws should be implemented for recycling waste.

I agree to large extent with the part of the people who are aligned with the opinion of legal laws should be implemented for recycling of home waste, Waste that comes from various activities such as cooking, washrooms, and different item from garbage from house needs to be recycled to keep our Environment clean and tidy place to live in. Government should take strict actions who are not following the recycle laws.

Some rewards can be kept by government for recycling the waste such as a award will be given to a family who reduces and recycle their waste by keeping the wet ,dry and reusable waste in different dustbins. For example nowadays Government are advertising swacch bharat abhiyaan where 'clean india green india' is the motto to save the environment for our future generation. There are many famous actors, celebrities and ministers taking part in this mission and due to which people are motivated to keep their surrounding clean.

To a small extent I also thinks that people should recognize their responsibility of keeping their neighborhood neat and clean rather than government forming the legal laws. There are many other things which are important in a government body which requires time which may be reduced due to excessive time given in the field of recycling.

Government should impose legal laws to protect the environment by providing award to an achievement and punishment who disobeys the laws. They should make a small internal body which can oversee this work rather than directly consume their time in this less important thing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of legal requirements for recycling. However, the development of ideas is somewhat inconsistent. While you provide a relevant example (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan), the argument regarding individual responsibility in the fourth paragraph feels slightly contradictory to your initial stance, creating a lack of clarity in your overall position. To improve, ensure that your supporting arguments consistently reinforce your main thesis rather than introducing conflicting viewpoints that are not fully reconciled. The ideas are relevant but could be extended with more depth regarding the specific impact of legislation versus voluntary measures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the transition between the third and fourth paragraphs is abrupt, and the use of 'some' and 'government' to start sentences feels formulaic. While there is a logical progression, the connections between sentences could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would significantly enhance the flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'some part of crowd' instead of 'some people' or 'a segment of the population'. Additionally, terms like 'legal laws' are redundant. You attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary (e.g., 'reusable waste', 'environment'), but the overall control is limited. To reach a higher band, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and avoiding repetitive or slightly unnatural word choices.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'some part of crowd claims', 'I also thinks'), article usage (e.g., 'the government' vs 'government'), and punctuation errors. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with pluralization and verb forms, to ensure your writing is more polished and professional.
