Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Most people think that not much of the waste materials from homes is recycle and the government should make it a legal requirement to increase recycling. I would argue that laws are also required to save our environment from pollution but instead we should provide proper facilities to people, so that they can easily recycle their waste.

On the one hand, some people think that the government should make it a legal requirement to increase recycling. Moreover, people will definitely follow the laws and recycle their waste from their homes. A small amount of fine should be impose on people who do not follow the laws. For instance, in Japan people intensively follow the legal laws and recycle their garbage, if they do not follow the law they have to pay heavy fine. People should responsibly do recycling and they have to separate the waste, that which is useable or which is not.

On the other hand, some people believe that we cannot follow the legal laws if we do not have proper facilities for recycling. Furthermore, the government should provide proper facilities for example they should add recycling bins outside of their homes and also provide transportation facilities, so that that the daily waste can be collected. For instance, in Pakistan the government provide facilities to the public to collect waste outside of their homes. They recycle some of the materials which can be used again and benefit the public. Additionally, the government should charge the public significantly less for all of these facilities.

To conclude, I believe that the government should provide basic facilities to the public to recycle their waste rather than to only make it a legal requirement.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, presenting a clear position that balances the need for legislation with the necessity of infrastructure. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples from Japan and Pakistan. However, the development is somewhat basic. For instance, the argument regarding fines in Japan is a bit repetitive, and the discussion on infrastructure could be more deeply explored to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main argument. To improve, you should aim to provide more nuanced analysis of why legislation alone might fail or how specific infrastructure projects have demonstrably increased recycling rates.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two sides of the argument. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow could be smoother. For example, the sentence 'People should responsibly do recycling and they have to separate the waste, that which is useable or which is not' is a bit clunky and disrupts the logical progression. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'legal requirement', 'pollution', and 'infrastructure' (implied by 'facilities'). However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'intensively follow the legal laws' (should be 'strictly adhere to') and 'fine should be impose' (should be 'imposed'). To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to avoid repetition of words like 'facilities' and 'laws'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'Most people think that not much of the waste materials from homes is recycle' (should be 'recycled'), 'A small amount of fine should be impose' (should be 'imposed'), and 'the government provide facilities' (should be 'provides'). These errors are persistent but do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
